Kiteboarding – Everything You Want to Know

Turks and Caicos is renowned as an excellent kiteboarding destination because the conditions are ideal for all levels of kiters. Beginners will find plenty of kiteboarding schools with certified instructors who can teach you the basics, while more experienced riders can seek out bigger waves and more challenging conditions. If you’re planning on doing some kiteboarding (also called Kitesurfing) in Turks and Caicos, this is everything you need to know.

What is Kiteboarding?

Kiteboarding as we know it today began when the French Legaignoux brothers patented an inflatable kite design in 1984. The sport exploded in popularity after that, and in 2001 the International Kiteboarding Organization was founded. Kiteboarding typically involves using a board with foot straps and a kite with a control bar and a harness attached to your waist. Top kiteboarding spots include Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Spain, Hawaii, and the Philippines.

Turks and Caicos Kiteboarding

Triton Kitesurfing 6
Kiteboarding - Everything You Want to Know 7

There are quite a few places you can kiteboard in Turks and Caicos. Long Bay Beach on Providenciales is by far the most popular and one of the easiest to access. Most kitesurfing schools conduct lessons in the waters off Long Bay Beach. Other kiteboarding spots can be found off Middle Caicos, North Caicos, and South Caicos.

What to Expect From Kiteboarding Lessons

A reputable kitesurfing school like Turks and Caicos Kiteboarding (TCK) will have instructors certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization. They can set you up with the proper equipment and teach you about setting up, safety and wind theory before getting you up in the water for your first ride. TCK also offers jet ski services to take you away from the crowds and help you out if you kite too far off course.

Kiteboarding vs Kitesurfing

Kiteboarding and kitesurfing are just two terms for the same sport. However, some people consider kitesurfing to be riding larger waves as opposed to gliding across flat water.

Kiteboarding Gear

Triton Kitesurfing 2
Kiteboarding - Everything You Want to Know 8

Basic kiteboarding gear includes a board, a kite with a control bar, and a harness. The most common type of boards are twin tip boards, which can go in either direction, and the most common type of kites are Leading Edge Inflatable (LEI) kites. Most control bars have four lines and are attached to a harness that goes around your waist.

The Best Turks and Caicos Kiteboarding Spots

Providenciales is where you will find the best kiteboarding spots in Turks and Caicos, particularly at Long Bay Beach. Leeward Going Through and The Bight Beach are also decent kiteboarding spots, but better for experienced kiters because of the currents and boat traffic. Many people also take kiteboarding day trips to Bambarra Beach, Wild Cow Run, and Cedar Point on Middle Caicos.

The Tides in Turks and Caicos

The Turks and Caicos Islands have consistent tide and wind conditions nearly all year long, so from November to August you can expect breezy days with little to no ocean swells in locations around Providenciales.

The Benefits of Kitesurfing

Kiteboarding offers a great workout because it activates all parts of the body including the core, arms, and legs. Over time it can help improve your balance, flexibility, and coordination. It can also be very therapeutic to be out on the water and taking in amazing scenery. Many people find that kiteboarding helps relieve stress and anxiety.

Triton Kitesurfing 7

Why is Long Bay Beach Great for Kiteboarding?

Long Bay Beach gets consistent southeast winds most of the year and the water is calm and shallow with a sandy bottom, which is great for beginners. For experienced kiters, you can step out of the front door and be launching your kite seconds later. However, there is no lifeguard in front of the villa, so we highly encourage beginners and less experienced kiters to have an instructor from TCK come to help launch the kite and follow along with a jet ski in case pick-up is needed.

Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos

Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos

The waters surrounding the Turks and Caicos Islands are exceptionally clear, which makes the archipelago a sublime snorkeling destination. Don a mask and a snorkel and you can see colorful coral gardens, crustaceans, tropical fish, and larger sea creatures like sharks and whales. Whether you’re snorkeling just off the beach in front of your villa or at the reefs and walls farther out, snorkeling in Turks and Caicos is always an eye-opening experience.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Turks and Caicos

Providenciales is one of the best places in Turks and Caicos for snorkeling because there are numerous shore reefs that you can access from the beach, as well as multiple tour companies that can take you to fascinating sites just a short boat ride away. These are a few of the best snorkeling spots that are easily reached from Providenciales:

Triton Snorkeling 1
Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos 18

The Bight Reef

The Bight Reef is a popular snorkeling spot because you can access it directly from the beach close to Grace Bay. Also called Coral Gardens, the reef extends about 350 feet (107m) and is home to soft and hard corals and an array of marine life. You might catch glimpses of green turtles, stingrays, parrotfish, barracuda, moray eels, nurse sharks, and more.

Smith’s Reef

Just off the beach in Turtle Cove, Smith’s Reef is actually a network of reefs that are quite different in terms of coral formations and sea creatures. Depending on which access point you choose, you could be snorkeling with eagle rays, angelfish, slipper lobsters, or southern brown stingrays. Come back at night to see nocturnal marine life like sea snails, squid, and shrimp.

Malcolm’s Road Beach

Malcolm’s Road Beach is part of the Northwest Point Marine National Park that stretches from the beach all the way out to the barrier reef. On calm days the visibility here is spectacular, which makes it excellent for snorkeling and diving. The coral shelves are home to a myriad of sights including sea urchins, sharks, and sea fans.

Water Conditions for Snorkeling

The water conditions vary depending on where you are snorkeling. In general, The Bight Reef is very calm and good for all skill levels and ages. Smith’s Reef has a slight current, but nothing to be overly concerned about. Malcolm’s Road is stunning on calm days, but it can also experience offshore winds and the occasional waves and currents along the coast. Be sure to check the wind and water conditions before you head out.

What Gear do You Need to Snorkel?

The great thing about snorkeling in Turks and Caicos is that you need very little gear. A mask and a snorkel are really all you need, especially if you are snorkeling at the reefs close to shore. Of course, fins are good to have too, as they help you glide quickly from spot to spot.

Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos

Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos

There are many reasons why paddleboarding is becoming so popular in Turks and Caicos. First of all, it’s very easy to learn. All it takes is a bit of balance and the ability to use an oar. Second of all, it’s a great way to explore waterways that you might not be able to access in a boat. Finally, the fact that you’re standing on a board allows you to see incredible views above and below the water. If you’re looking to do some paddle boarding in Turks and Caicos, these are some things you should know.

What is Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP Boarding)?

Paddleboarding originated in Hawaii as a way for surf instructors to get better views of their students and the wave conditions. Basically, it involves standing on a surf-style board and using a long oar to propel you through the water.

Triton paddle board 6
Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos 28

Paddle Boarding vs Paddle Surfing, What’s the Difference?

Stand-up paddleboarding is typically done in calm waters where you can easily glide across the surface and steer the board in different directions with your paddle. As the name suggests, paddle surfing involves riding or surfing waves on a board with a paddle. Paddle surfing is not very common in Turks and Caicos because there are very few swells to ride.

Where Can You Paddle Board in Turks & Caicos?

You can paddle board anywhere in Turks and Caicos where the water is calm. Long Bay Beach is a great place for paddle boarding because there are very few large waves. In addition, the water is quite shallow and the bottom is soft and sandy, which is great for beginners who might not have their balance down in the beginning. Guests staying at Triton Luxury Villa can paddle board directly from the beach in front of the villa.

Triton paddle board 4
Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos 29

What Equipment do You Need?

The only equipment you need to paddle board is the actual board and a long oar. A paddle boarding company can set you up with the right board and oar for your height and size.

Triton paddle board family 5
Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos 30

Do You Have to Be Fit to Paddleboard?

You only need a basic level of fitness and a bit of balance to learn how to paddle board. The hardest physical part is using the oar to propel you forward and steer the board. That being said, paddle boarding is a great exercise because it works your whole body, especially your core.

What Can You See on a Paddle Board Tour?

Triton paddle board 3
Paddleboarding in Turks and Caicos 31

The great thing about paddleboarding is that you can cruise along shallow and narrow waterways that boats can’t reach, so you can see more than you would on a boat charter trip. In addition, paddle boarding is relatively quiet, so it doesn’t scare away wildlife and sea creatures like motorised water sports do. Many paddle board tours in Turks and Caicos will take you to protected national parks and through the mangroves where you can see turtles, sharks, sea birds, and much more. And of course you’ll get to take in the natural beauty of the coastlines and turquoise ocean.

Paddle Board Suppliers

Big Blue Collective is a tour company that offers daily paddle board tours in the waters around Providenciales. Experience is not necessary for the two-hour tour, as the instructors can teach you the basics and have you riding in no time.

Fishing in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Anglers flock to Turks and Caicos for its world-class sportfishing. Providenciales is the center of all the fishing action as there are plenty of excellent fishing sites just a short boat ride away. The island also hosts a number of fishing tournaments throughout the year for deep-sea, bonefishing, and bottom fishing. A Turks and Caicos fishing adventure makes for a fun day out with the whole family and friends.

Types of Fishing Charters

Turks and Caicos is blessed with an abundance of reefs, underwater walls, quiet bays, and mangrove forests, which means that there are plenty of options when it comes to charters.

Deep Sea Fishing

The Turks and Caicos islands sit on the edge of marine shelves that start at about 45 feet and drop thousands of feet into the ocean. This means there is plenty of deep-sea fish to be found very close to the islands. Potential catches include blue marlin, swordfish, sailfish, tuna, mahi-mahi, and barracuda.

Bonefishing

Bonefish congregate in the mudflats around Providenciales, which makes it easy to pull in a decent haul just a short distance from shore. Bonefishing is typically done with a fly rod or spin casting from a shallow draft boat. Most bonefish range from four to eight pounds and it is common to encounter huge schools of them on the marine banks.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is increasing in popularity in Turks and Caicos. There are numerous charter companies that can guide you to excellent spots, set you up with equipment and teach you the basics like how to present a fly and cast. Catches include bonefish, tarpon, and snook.

Reef & Bottom Fishing

Reef and bottom fishing is relatively easy, so it’s a great activity for families with young children. Nothing beats watching the joy in a little one’s face when they catch their first fish. Typical catches include red snapper, bar jack, yellowtail snapper, cero, and barracuda. You could even catch a lionfish and shark.

Fishing

Best Time of Year to Fish

You can fish year-round in Turks and Caicos, although some seasons are better than others for certain types of fish. December to March is the peak tourist season, so boats can get booked up fast.

Fishing

How Far Out Do You Need to Go for Deep Sea Fishing?

Because the Turks and Caicos islands sit so close to the marine shelves, it only takes about 10 minutes by boat to get to deep water.

Monthly Fishing Chart

Many fish are available year-round in the waters off of the Turks and Caicos islands including grouper, snapper, cero, triggerfish, and bonefish. From November to March you have a good chance of reeling in deep-sea fish like mahi-mahi, sailfish, and blackfin tuna as well as barracuda and reef sharks. From July to September the conditions are excellent for blue marlin, bigeye tuna, and yellowfin tuna.

While some boat owners don’t mind sleeping onboard their vessel while it’s docked in the marina, many more choose to rent a holiday home so they can stretch their legs and enjoy a bit of space and seclusion on land. Triton Luxury Villa is the perfect accommodation for boat owners visiting Turks and Caicos because the villa is just a short drive to some of Providenciales’ best marinas including Caicos Marina, Blue Haven Marina, and Turtle Cove Marina. Unlike at a marina, guests of Triton will have direct access to a beautiful beach as well as seven spacious and chic bedrooms, two swimming pools, a hot tub, and an outdoor movie theater with a fire pit.

Grace Bay Beach vs Long Bay Beach

Grace Bay Beach and Long Bay Beach are two of the most popular destinations on the island of Providenciales. Once home to just a few small fishing villages and a series of salt flats, Providenciales is now the jewel of Turks and Caicos with all manner of accommodation, dining, and nightlife. Long Bay and Grace Bay are known for their stunning white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and proximity to luxury hotels and villas. Yet while each offers endless opportunities for sun, sea and sand, there are quite a few differences between these holiday hotspots.

Best for Relaxation: Long Bay

If you’re looking to indulge in some rest and relaxation, Long Bay Beach is your spot. This three-mile beach has soft sand that is fringed with palm trees and calm, shallow waters that are perfect for leisurely swims. Unlike Grace Bay Beach, there are very few hotels, restaurants, and bars here, so the beach is usually crowd-free.

Best for Nightlife: Grace Bay

Grace Bay is the most popular holiday destination in Providenciales, so it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of nightlife spots where you can party until the wee hours of the morning. Establishments range from easy-going pubs to bustling waterfront bars with patios and live music.

Long Bay is Great for Families

Families love Long Bay Beach for its peaceful atmosphere and calm, shallow waters that are perfect for little ones. The ocean floor is soft and sandy so kids can splash around without parents worrying about them hurting themselves on rocks or coral. Older kids and adults can try a variety of water sports including kiteboarding, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Long Bay is More Private than Grace Bay

Grace Bay is lined with large hotels, and Long Bay is home to private residences and luxury villas. This gives the area a more secluded and exclusive feel. For example, Triton Luxury Villa offers the utmost privacy with two acres of lushly landscaped grounds, seven spacious bedrooms, two swimming pools, and unobstructed views of the ocean. In addition, Triton offers direct access to the beach.

Distance from Triton Villa to Grace Bay

Although Triton Luxury Villa seems like it’s a world away from bustling Grace Bay, it’s actually just a 10-minute drive from the front door of the villa to Grace Bay Beach.

Activities Available on Long Bay vs Grace Bay

Both Grace Bay and Long Bay offer your usual warm weather activities like sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. However, Grace Bay Beach is more popular for motorized water sports like jet skiing, water skiing, and boat trips for scuba diving or fishing. Grace Bay is also home to Provo Golf Club.

Long Bay Beach is famous for kiteboarding and horseback riding in the water. Long Bay has far fewer visitors than Grace Bay, allowing for much more privacy to enjoy water activities.

Long Bay is Best for Kiteboarding

Kiteboarders in the know head to Long Bay to ride the waves because the area gets consistent trade winds year-round. Another draw is the shallow water with a clear sandy bottom, which makes it great for beginner kiteboarders to learn the basics. There are also a number of kiteboarding schools that cater to beginner and advanced riders.
