Families visiting Turks and Caicos will find endless possibilities for fun and excitement. The natural environment provides plenty of opportunities for exploration and physical activity, and family-friendly tour companies and restaurants have something to offer all ages. There are numerous beaches with calm, shallow waters, and there are no poisonous snakes or insects here, so it’s the ideal destination for families with both younger and older children.

Keeping the Entire Family Entertained in Turks and Caicos

One of the great things about Turks and Caicos is that there are activities the whole family can do together. Whether you have young children or teenagers, you can find fun things to do that will keep kids entertained for hours on end and give you some quality time together.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding along the beach is one of the quintessential Turks and Caicos activities. Companies like Provo Ponies can set the whole family up with friendly ponies for horseback rides. Rides take place along the white sand of Long Bay Beach and even through the water. The tours include safety equipment and guides.

Snorkeling

The calm waters surrounding Providenciales are teeming with marine life, which makes them perfect for snorkeling. Bight Reef and Smith’s Reef are popular with families because you can access them directly from the beach. Both reefs have an abundance of sea creatures including sea turtles, eagle rays, parrotfish, and seahorses.

Boat Trips to Remote Islands

A boat trip is a fun day out for the entire family. As well as a great way to see more of Turks and Caicos. Big Blue Unlimited and Island Vibes both offer family-friendly boat charters. Trips include exploring deserted beaches, snorkeling, food and drinks. You can also customize your trip with a beach BBQ or your preferred water sports.

Eco Tours

Eco tours are unique excursions that involve kayaking through mangrove forests to see interesting wildlife and pristine nature. Kids can learn about the geography of the islands. As well as see interesting animals above and below the water like iguanas, nurse sharks, and seabirds.

Keeping Kids Entertained at a Private Villa

Your private villa also offers plenty of activities for little ones. In fact, Triton Luxury Villa is perfectly set up for families. The villa is equipt with toys for young children, as well as a crib and highchair for an infant. Two bedrooms on the lower level are ideal for families with small children. As well as tennis camps with instructors who will come to the villa for private lessons. For older kids, kayaking, kiteboarding, and paddleboarding lessons are available right on Long Bay Beach. Guests can also go on bike riding trips around the Long Bay area.

Family-friendly Cuisine

Triton’s resident chef has a great deal of experience cooking healthy and delicious meals that kids love. You can also plan a cookie making class with our concierge. Dining out is an option, as there are many restaurants that cater to little ones. Favorites are Turkberry for frozen yogurt and Da Conch Shack for ribs, chicken, steak and more.

What to Pack on a Family Vacation to Turks and Caicos?

  • Reef Safe Sunscreen — Although you might not feel the heat because of the trade winds from Long Bay Beach, it can quickly catch up when spending time outside. We encourage our guests to use Reef Safe sunscreen when snorkeling to protect the island’s beautiful reefs.
  • Lip balm with sunscreen — When it comes to sun protection, lips are often neglected, but they get just as much sun as the rest of the face. A lip balm with SPF can prevent burns and chapped, peeling lips.
  • Hats or visors — Sun protection for the head is key for preventing burns and sun strokes, especially on outdoor excursions like boat trips and horseback rides.
  • Rash guards — If you plan to enjoy water sports, a rash guard is great for protecting adults and kids from sunburns and abrasions.
  • Aloe or after-sun cream — Sunburns can happen even with the best intentions. Aloe gel or after-sun cream hydrates and soothes sore sunburnt skin.
  • Bug spray — Triton doesn’t have issues with mosquitos because of the consistent winds, but you might encounter these pesky bugs elsewhere on the island, especially at dusk and dawn and whilst spending time inland.
  • Packaged snacks for kids — The grocery stores on Providenciales have popular kid-approved snacks, but there is a limited selection of brands. If your kids are picky or not keen on trying new foods, you may want to bring some of their favorite snacks from home.
  • Diapers and baby care items — There are limited baby care brands available on Providenciales, so it’s best to bring a supply if you care about the brand you use.

Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos

Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos

The waters surrounding the Turks and Caicos Islands are exceptionally clear, which makes the archipelago a sublime snorkeling destination. Don a mask and a snorkel and you can see colorful coral gardens, crustaceans, tropical fish and larger sea creatures like sharks and whales. Whether you’re snorkeling just off the beach in front of your villa or at the reefs and walls farther out, snorkeling in Turks and Caicos is always an eye-opening experience.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Turks and Caicos

Providenciales is one of the best places in Turks and Caicos for snorkeling because there are numerous shore reefs that you can access from the beach, as well as multiple tour companies that can take you to fascinating sites just a short boat ride away. These are a few of the best snorkelling spots that are easily reached from Providenciales:

The Bight Reef

The Bight Reef is a popular snorkeling spot because you can access it directly from the beach close to Grace Bay. Also called Coral Gardens, the reef extends about 350 feet (107m) and is home to soft and hard corals and an array of marine life. You might catch glimpses of green turtles, sting rays, parrotfish, barracuda, moray eels, nurse sharks and more.

Smith’s Reef

Just off the beach in Turtle Cove, Smith’s Reef is actually a network of reefs that are quite different in terms of coral formations and sea creatures. Depending on which access point you choose, you could be snorkeling with eagle rays, angelfish, slipper lobsters or southern brown stingrays. Come back at night to see nocturnal marine life like sea snails, squid and shrimp.

Malcolm’s Road Beach

Malcolm’s Road Beach is part of the Northwest Point Marine National Park that stretches from the beach all the way out to the barrier reef. On calm days the visibility here is spectacular, which makes it excellent for snorkeling and diving. The coral shelves are home to a myriad of sights including sea urchins, sharks and sea fans.

Water Conditions for Snorkeling

The water conditions vary depending on where you are snorkeling. In general, The Bight Reef is very calm and good for all skill levels and ages. Smith’s Reef has a slight current, but nothing to be overly concerned about. Malcolm’s Road is stunning on calm days, but it can also experience offshore winds and the occasional waves and currents along the coast. Be sure to check the wind and water conditions before you head out.

What Type of Marine Life Exists in Turks & Caicos?

Turks and Caicos has some of the most abundant marine life in the Caribbean. This means that you’re guaranteed to see something stirring under the water on a snorkeling session. Common sightings include turtles, lobsters, parrotfish, angelfish, and stingrays. Rarer sightings include nurse sharks, whales, dolphins, octopi and red lionfish.

What Gear do You Need to Snorkel?

The great thing about snorkeling in Turks and Caicos is that you need very little gear. A mask and a snorkel is really all you need, especially if you are snorkeling at the reefs close to shore. Of course, fins are good to have too, as they help you glide quickly from spot to spot.

Can You Snorkel at Triton Villa?

Triton Luxury Villa’s beachfront location makes it an excellent spot to set out for a snorkeling session because the ocean is just steps away and Triton has snorkel gear available for guests to use during their stay, so there is no need to track down a tour operator. Of course, should you decide you want to take a boat charter trip, the staff at Triton can arrange snorkeling trips with reputable tour providers.
